Homeless or just less this home
Either way you look at it, it's challenging. When our landlord told us he was selling his house that had become our home, I was gutted. "What are we going to do?" I cried. We had no permanent employment and my dad, "what will happen to dad?". It's OK for Quiggy and I to couch surf between homes but not my dad. "Who will give us a home without permanent jobs?, Where would we move to and how will we find another place we actually like?"
That was the cry baby me carrying on like the world had ended.
Then the braver me realised that when one door closes another two open.
The first door to open was my dad's new home. After lots of research and soul searching it was time to place dad into the care of others. We had spent a year rehabilitating dad and we'd done a marvellous job. He was ready to move and although reluctant to be surrounded by 'old people', being the whipper snapper he is, he understood the predicament we faced. He is safe, well looked after and close to family and friends. It took a bit of adjusting but the move has been right.
The second door is to the world. We have decided to pack up our house, put it all in storage and travel overseas indefinitely. But how? and where?
With some savings we had been putting aside for a future holiday and the idea to house sit for free accommodation, the how? was beginning to appear. The where? was chosen by climate and cost. After a long year of winter in Melbourne I knew I couldn't possibly handle the snow of Europe nor could we handle the extreme heats of many countries. Deciding on starting in lower North America seemed like a happy medium and thanks to expedia.com, the flights were very affordable.
Now with flights booked and a rough budget set, home sitting sites were our next venture. I researched best sites specific to chosen location and joined housecarers.com and housesittersamerica.com
Thanks to our experience with airbnb and the lovely references from our friends and prior house sits, we had secured our first home sit in San Pedro, California and a second home sit in Anza. We will need to look after much loved pets and live in stranger's homes but think of the adventure and new friends we'll make.
From the threat of homelessness to doors opening across the world, we have no need to look Back. We will Skip Christmas in Australia and Go where the next doors open.
