Don't worry, I got this - why taking a risk is good
There's nothing like the courage of a 4 year old to remind us that taking a risk, with confidence, is good for our growth. While I was on the phone talking to Dad about our big trip and how I will make sure everything is organised before I go so he won't have to worry about a thing (why do I commit to such overachieving??) little Miss #3 grandchild, without my knowledge, has climbed the 6 foot fence and is peering over to the neighbours whilst hovering over a concrete ground!
Looking back to my face which was struck with the fear of:
1. how on earth did she just get up there?
2. what if she falls?
3. what will her mother say when she gets home?
4. I'm the worst grandmother in the world!
she then calmly says to me
"don't worry Nanny, I got this!".
Of course she does. She has the confidence to take a risk. She knows she could fall but chooses to climb anyway. She wants to know what's over the fence? Is there someone new there? Maybe there's some fun things there or something she's never seen before. Even if she doesn't see much, the climb up was exciting. Nanny had to let her go and believe that she could do it. I was always there to catch her should she fall, and help her climb again. Courage must prevail.
When people hear our plans to travel the world with limited plans, funds and knowledge, they are struck with fear and excitement. Most of all they believe that they couldn't do it because:
1. I can't afford it
2. I need control and to plan everything
3. I can't get the time off work
4. I have animals to look after
5. I couldn't take the kids
6. I'd be too scared
We have faced these obstacles too but we want to climb that fence anyway, see what's on the other side and know that we could fall but we can always get up and climb again.
