Flying long haul has it's perks. You can delay your next birthday a whole day if you just continue to go East.

We travelled around 12,000 kilometres from Brisbane to Auckland to Los Angeles on 2 different planes in 3 different time zones and still managed to land before we left! That just blows my mind and the time difference continues to confuse me almost a week into our trip. Now in California, we are 19 hours behind Melbourne, 18 hours behind Brisbane and 21 hours behind Auckland making phone calls home to the kids a mathematical equation requiring help from NASA.

Speaking of confusion, ever tried driving on the wrong side of the road? A lovely local corrected me and said "just remember we drive on the right side of the road". That actually is correct but the steering wheel is still on the wrong side of the car! Quiggy is the designated driver here and I have almost been left by the side of the road for my back seat driver instructions (screams of fear) that make 'wrong side of the road' driving even less fun that it sounds.

The fun doesn't stop there, wait 'til you go shopping. There is so much choice here in America and their taxes are much lower making a lot of goods so much cheaper than ours. What is confusing is when you pay. The price may say $2.99 but tax is not included. So just add the relevant tax of the city you are purchasing from, yep they are different, and add it to the tax for the State you are in, different too, and then you know what to pay...simple! Cash is simple too. All notes are the same colour and they still use 1c and 2c coins here so no rounding up or down to worry about, just make sure you've got somewhere to put all the small coins you will accumulate, and no they are not acceptable tips. $1 notes also come in $1 coins both silver AND gold. What could be simpler than having one dollar in three varieties to choose from? and yes these are acceptable tips.

As we are now a day younger the jet lag should have no effect on the new skills we are acquiring while travelling...right? Wrong. No one said getting younger would be easier.
